Shady Trees for Sunny People

Falling Short: Million Trees Miami… Solutions Needed

Miami-Dade County adopted a Street Tree Master Plan with the goal of achieving 30% tree canopy coverage by 2020. They are about 750,000 trees short of this goal.
Community action group Emerge Miami partnered with Urban Paradise Guild (UPG) to launch a community-based program to achieve that goal. We will help our community mobilize volunteers, private resources and engage government services to get a million trees planted!

Street Tree Planting

Many cities adopted the County Street Tree Master Plan. We are gathering info from municipalities, and know the most about the City of Miami. In Miami, when at least 30 property owners in a neighborhood to request a swale tree planting simultaneously, the City gets it done. We will facilitate this process and in the future will propose larger impact uses of government resources both in and beyond Miami. Canvassers are needed to spread the word.
Please see the other side for the City of Miami Swale Tree application.

Field Volunteer Opportunities

Urban Paradise Guild offers routine Volunteer Opportunities on habitat, nursery, and agriculture projects at Vizcaya, Amelia Garden Center, Matheson, Oleta River State Park, and ACE Preserve. The Seeds for Haiti Initiative has already packaged and delivered enough seeds so that 26,000 people in hurricane-devastated SW Haiti can feed themselves.

Citizen Lobbying

We will train and engage citizen lobbyists to build the grassroots pressure necessary for politicians to make informed but unglamorous decisions about trees, native habitat and community agriculture. Currently, politicians get much of their information from paid lobbyists representing big business. Citizen lobbyists will represent the community’s needs.

Trees Committee

Big impacts require substantial resources, ideas, management structure, marketing… Join us in combining our current resources with new ideas. Develop strategies to get more good trees in the ground. Work on fundraising and sponsorships. Process tree applications. Wade through the policy jungle. Together we can ensure Miami-Dade County has Shady Trees for Sunny People!
