PreK Environmental Educator (Part Time, Paid)

The Environmental Educator will work with PreK children, introducing them through positive experiences to the natural world. Vegetable gardens and native habitats will serve as a living classrooms. They will harvest food… and sometimes eat it for lunch or snacks. They will observe the lifecycles of butterflies, and learn why the plants are so important. They will learn about sustainability (for their level). Their hands will be in the dirt, on a journey of discovery guided by the educator.

This is a hands-on position. It requires an active person who can lift, dig, sweat, and expects to get grubby. Garden Maintenance (weeding and planting, etc) is required. Occasional labor may be needed, such as garden installation.
Reliable transportation is a must; the educator will travel with a kit of tools and materials to the schools.
Must be prepared to collaborate under UPG management with multicultural School partners, as part of a team that includes sustainability and dietary evaluators and instructors.

An ideal candidate is an educational professional with environmental roots. S/he should be either a teacher, or in college earning an education degree (or a degree in an environmental field with an education minor). An AA degree (or 2 years in a Bachelors program) is preferred.

The position is for 42 weeks (5 days per week for 3.5 hours per day).

Training is provided through immersion at our first partner site (a Montessori school). An initial experiential curricula is provided with plans to transform teachable moments into memorable life lessons.
